Chapter 25
âMax, Brutus and I want to apologize for the way we spoke to you yesterday,â said Harriet, looking as contrite as Iâd ever seen her look. Brutus, too, gave me apologetic glances, and the coupleâs performance warmed the cockles of my heart.
âThatâs all right, you guys,â I said therefore. âNo bad feelings.â
When I looked up, though, I noticed how Gran was standing nearby, arms crossed in front of her and impatiently tapping her foot.
âAnd what else did we discuss?â she asked now. âHarriet? Brutus?â
âOh, Gran, do we have to?â said Harriet, and that warm fuzzy feeling Iâd been experiencing dissipated to some extent. It was obvious now that those apologies werenât exactly heartfelt but had more to do with Granâs gentleâor not so gentleâcoercion.
âMax, weâre going to offer youâ¦â Gran prompted.
Harriet rolled her eyes, then said, reluctantly, âMax, weâre going to offer you half of our kibble for the next two weeks to show you how sorry we are for the way we treated you.â
âAnd now say it like you mean it,â said Gran, who was a tough taskmaster.
âThatâs all right,â I said. âI donât want your kibbleâand frankly speaking I donât want your apologies either. At least not like this.â
âNot like what?â asked Harriet, looking surprised.
âItâs obvious that youâre not really sorry,â I said.
âBut I am sorry,â said Harriet.
âYeah, especially since Gran threatened to ground us for a month if we didnât apologize,â grunted Brutus.
âOh, God,â I said, and started to walk away. With friends like Harriet and Brutus, I meant to say, who needs enemies, right?
âNo, Max, but I really do mean it,â said Harriet quickly. âI never should have laughed at your⦠accident.â
âAnd I shouldnât have made that crack about your sixteen-pack,â said Brutus, though judging from the gleam in his eyes he still thought it was a pretty good joke.
âLook, if you guys want to make fun of me, thatâs fine,â I said. âBut donât pretend that weâre friends, because friends donât say nasty things about each other, and they certainly donât make fun of a friendâs misfortune.â
And with these words, I was off. Having terminated our friendship once and for all, I felt a lot better, actually. I now realized I only had one true friend and that was Dooley.
âI told you that actions have consequences,â I heard Gran admonish my former friends.
Inside, Odelia and Chase were having breakfast, and Dooley was lounging on the windowsill, enjoying a bit of sunshine before the day turned into another scorcher.
âHey, Max,â said Odelia, and inspected my belly. âLooks like your fur is coming in already.â She patted me on the head. âPretty soon now youâll be back to your old self.â
I nodded a little morosely. Itâs never a lot of fun to break up with oneâs friends, and I was smarting a little I have to admit.
Odelia must have noticed I was in a bit of a funk, for she said, âChase and I are going to try to talk to Bobby Garibaldi today. Wanna come?â
I perked up a little at that.
